Is grey hair your natural colour?
Grey hair is not your natural colour but first, let’s understand where your natural hair colour comes from. Your hair colour comes from a pigment called melanin which hair follicles produce. As you age, the production of melanin in your hair follicles slows down. This production slows down until it stops completely hence your grey hairs. Due to a lack of melanin, your hair also becomes wiry and brittle. No more bouncing locks.
What also plays a role besides ageing in becoming grey-haired?
Besides age…race, ethnicity, and genes also play a role in becoming grey-haired. Chronic stress can be added to the list too. And, what does stress do, takes a toll on your immune system?
A weak immune system may be the culprit to your greying hair because it is more likely to attract illnesses more frequently. According to Health Harvard Publishing Harvard Medical School, the majority of us have age-related greying. However, sometimes greying hair is due to illnesses.
Here are 6 illnesses that may cause grey hair…
- vitamin B12 deficiency
- tuberous sclerosis
- alopecia areata
- thyroid disease
What can you do about greying hair?
There may not be a lot you can do to stop or slow down your hair from turning grey. First, you need to decide how you want to deal with it. Acceptance, keep your gorgeous locks of grey. Spruce up your locks with hair colour. Or build up your immune system to prevent illness, therefore, slowing down the greying process.

Is your immune system to blame for your grey hair?
When you are stressed, your immune system’s ability to fight off toxins is reduced. Reduction in your stress level may improve the production of melanin hence less snowy hair. I know that is easier to say than to do because of your busy lifestyle. Seems like we never have time for ourselves. For that reason now is the time. Here are a few steps in stress management.
- Get enough sleep
- Use relaxation techniques
- Make time for you
- Support group
Above all, maintaining a balanced diet while living a healthy lifestyle may improve the production of melanin. Not sure you are getting enough vitamins and minerals, then check with your doctor or nutritionist.
