Is gray hair your natural colour?

Gray hair is not your natural colour but first, let’s understand where your natural hair colour comes from. Your hair colour comes from a pigment called melanin which hair follicles produce. As you age, the production of melanin in your hair follicles slows down. This production slows down until it stops completely hence your gray hairs.  Due to a lack of melanin, your hair also becomes wiry and brittle. No more bouncing locks.

What also plays a role besides ageing in becoming gray-haired?

Besides age…race, ethnicity, and genes also play a role in becoming gray-haired. Chronic stress can be added to the list too. And, what does stress do, takes a toll on your immune system.

A weak immune system may be the culprit to your graying hair because it is more likely to attract illnesses more frequently. According to Health Harvard Publishing Harvard Medical School, the majority of us have age-related graying. However, sometimes graying hair is due to illnesses.

Here are 6 illnesses that may cause gray hair…

  • vitamin B12 deficiency
  • neurofibromatosis
  • tuberous sclerosis
  • vitiligo
  • alopecia areata
  • thyroid disease

What can you do about graying hair?

There may not be a lot you can do to stop or slow down your hair from turning gray. First, you need to decide how you want to deal with it. Acceptance, keep your gorgeous locks of gray. Spruce up your locks with hair colour. Or build up your immune system to prevent illness, therefore, slowing down the graying process.

Is your immune system to blame for your gray hair?

When your stressed, your immune system’s ability to fight off toxins is reduced. Reduction in your stress level may improve the production of melanin hence less snowy hair. I know that is easier to say than to do because of your busy lifestyle. Seems like we never have time for ourselves. For that reason now is the time. Here are a few steps in stress management.

  • Get enough sleep
  • Use relaxation techniques
  • Exercise
  • Make time for you
  • Support group
  • Counselling

Above all, maintaining a balanced diet while living a healthy lifestyle may improve the production of melanin. Not sure you are getting enough vitamins and minerals, then check with your doctor or nutritionist.

Need an extra boost to keep your immune system healthy?

Maintaining a healthy immune system is not that easy. Your body is naturally full of microbes. Unfortunately, you are exposed to toxins each and every day.
